Despite my best endeavours to blog as often as possible about my 30 Before 30 book challenge, I am finding it difficult to keep up at the moment. And it’s only about to get worse, but for a very good reason… I have a new job with The Reader Organisation!
For those people who’ve never heard of it, The Reader Organisation is a charitable social enterprise based in Liverpool that aims to engage people in the act of reading for pleasure. Promoting literature as a force for good and using it as a means of facilitating social inclusion, The Reader Organisation works in a wide range of settings, including prisons, community centres, libraries and schools, trying to grow a culture of shared reading across the UK. As the job I’ve been offered is a Reading Role Model Project Worker position, I’m going to be trying (trying being the operative word!) to cultivate a love of books/reading in primary and secondary school boys, and working with staff and parents to ensure they are doing the same. Basically, my new job is just doing the things I love best- reading, talking about books, being creative, and trying to help people. Unfortunately, the job description doesn’t mention anything about dancing, obsessive crisp eating, petting animals, or excessive tea-drinking, but I’m sure I can fit that in somewhere…
The role is only for 6 months initially (it’s a pilot scheme, so continuation is dependent on the success of the project), and also involves me moving to Liverpool. Whilst I am a little sad about leaving my beloved Yorkshire, I love a good adventure, so I’m viewing this as the start of something exciting. As I said at my interview, I’m the type of person who thrives on change. When life is too stable and monotonous I begin to feel stifled, so a change of scenery is definitely welcome!
Other than the fact I don’t really know anyone in Liverpool, the only downside to all this is that it’s going to interfere with my 30 Before 30 challenge! Working with young boys means that I will be reading lots of ‘boy-friendly’ books, which will leave me very little time to complete my list. I’m not intending to give it up however- just be warned that I may be a little lax in reading and blogging from the end of this month.
Speaking of which, there are still two books I haven’t blogged about yet…so, besides trying to find a place to live in Liverpool, it looks as if that’s my aim for this week!
